Dull as Dishwater

Print Hut! The Uk's Only Ultra Wholesale Printing Company announced today the Launch of 'Dull as Dishwater', a monthly contest to uncover the dullest and most tired looking corporate ID in the Area. The irreverent printing company, based just outside of St. Neots in Cambridgeshire wants to highlight the importance of their clients' visual identities and expose shamelessly those which have run their course and in desperate need of a makeover. Frank Golden, the Company's Sales Director added, 'though I would love to 'name and shame' some of the worst culprits, I won't as that may cause offense, but you know who you are!!! Instead we are asking companies who suspect they are in need of a change to stand up and be brave.' Frank Golden continues, ' Print Hut will hold a contest at the end of each month, asking a notable figure from the Marketing World to pick out the 'dullest' that there is and in return Print Hut will offer a totally free make over. We are delighted that Tania Barton, ALF Marketing Director has agreed to be our first judge'
The hunt is now on to find a corporate Identity nightmare for October, so if you are ready to be shamed, send your existing Corporate ID to Frank Golden, Print Hut, The Micro Print factory, The Great North Road, Little Paxton, St. Neots, Cambridgeshire PE19 6EN.

Printed item of the week 18.09.09

Ok this was a piece Print Hut produced for a local hospital Trust. Part of a Direct Mail pack promoting the need for raising funds for a new CT scanner. The flimsey tissue paper was a visual reflection of the delicate nature the human brain can be in after a road traffic accident for example. The slighest movement can perminantly dammage brain tissue etc... do you get the picture?
Produced by a specialised print manufacturer in China, the printing was 2 colour litho onto an 18 gramme tissue substrate. What I admire in the print production is the precision of the final trimming to acheive the A4 sheet. Can you imagine a whole stack of these going under the blades of an industrial guillotine and the probability of siding and slipping. Usally tissue paper is left on reels before being packed flat in folded sheets. A process that is fully mechanised. Well done to all those involved.

Minuimum wage updates and the effects on wholesale printing costs

Had a good hard think about this as it has been bothering me for a while. The answer is I am unsure; Undoubtably its going to cause additional pressure on our wholesle providers, but in the economic condition can they afford to respond! I guess, damned if they do and damned if they dont. Hopefully any recovery will make that decision easier. Anyway here are the facts

Employers are being reminded that 1 October sees increases in the hourly rates for the national minimum wage. The rate for workers aged 22 or over rises to 5.80 an hour; for workers aged 18 to 21 it rises to 4.83 an hour; and for workers aged below 18 who are no longer of compulsory school age it rises to 3.57 an hour. The daily accommodation offset, which is the amount per day that an employer may offset from the minimum wage when providing a worker with living accommodation, is to be 4.51.

There are changes, too, to the way that the minimum wage and tips and service charges are managed.

From 1 October, employers are not allowed to count service charges, cover charges, tips and gratuities paid to workers through the payroll as part of the minimum wage. Tips given directly to a worker by a customer will continue not to be included as part of the minimum wage. Also from 1 October, the redundancy payment rules are amended.

The limit on a weeks pay for the purposes of working out statutory redundancy payments increases from 350 to 380. The rise also affects employment tribunal awards calculated on the basis of a weeks pay.

Print Prices

As over capacity increased in the last quarter so costs from our wholesale providers began to dip. Well done all those who saw the signs and got more print for their money. However, that traditionally lean period is now over and we will see prices starting to rise through September, leading to a peak around 30 days prior to Christmas. Our advise is get your orders confirmed by mid September and Print Hut! will offer to hold their prices for a further 30 days.
