Hitchin 25 St. Neots 0 Hitchin 30 St. Neots 10

So this was the first game of the new season for the St. Neots under 9s. Could the lads bring all the elements of the new game to Hitchin a club that always starts strong and has a far superior depth of squad than most in our league?
Well from the start it was clear that Hitchin were a more advanced squad, had successfully transcended the tag game and had a maturer understanding of the maul and rucking, showing St. Neots how to present the ball, create space and pass out to the wings.
For the first game St Neots didnt find the space needed to break Hitchins line and though the wingers of James and Alex found opportunities the support wasnt there when the tackles came in. Sloppy passing by St. Neots made Hitchins job easier than they could have possibly expected and quickly found the St. Neots loose balls that led to the tries and a final score for the first game of 25 0. However, both Liam and Daniel began to use their build and showed us that we have a formidable driving force, only lacking fine tuning and technique when presenting the ball, something which our hosts seemed to have a much better understanding of.

The second game saw all boys getting a game and some of our earlier weaknesses seemed to have improved. Liam was the first to break Hitchins line after a loose ball, then a penalty awarded to St. Neots for a knock on allowed Daniel, 10 yards from their line to make it 2 for St. Neots with a great straight run into their defence. However St. Neots never looked like they could take home a victory this week against such a strong side so early on in the new season. The final score of game 2 sat at 30-10.

Bryan and Jim both praised the boys for their effort and determination reiterating that you can work on technique, but ya cant work on passion. The player of the week was awarded to Thomas and not James as earlier posted (sorry James) by the players. Next week is at St. Neots for training. Please email Bryan with what areas of training you feel we should be concentrating on next week.
